Everybody loves a bright, white smile. Brushing twice daily with fluoride, flossing once a day, and having regular teeth cleanings can all help your smile stay white. However, if you decide you would like to go beyond regular care to make your smile look brighter, our office offers many options.
Benefits of Teeth Whitening
- Improves your appearance
- Boosts confidence
- An affordable way to improve your smile quickly
Teeth Whitening Treatments We Offer
We offer several options to help you get a brighter smile. If you are looking for professional products, The Addison Dentist provides professional teeth whitening options powered by Opalescence Boost®. We also offer take-home teeth whitening.
Professional teeth whitening by your dentist is your best choice when you want quality, long-term results. There are a couple of ways to whiten teeth with the professional formula of Opalescence Boost.
Professional Tooth Bleaching in Our Office
Opalescence Boost is a professional teeth whitening treatment that gets your teeth eight shades whiter on average — in just one hour! The treatment is safe, simple, and relaxing! Plus, Opalescence Boost teeth whitening is a totally comfortable process.
- To prepare for the Opalescence Boost tooth bleaching procedure, your cosmetic dentist will examine your teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.
- Your lips and gums will be covered with an isolation material to protect them during the tooth bleaching treatment.
- Once your lips and gums are protected, we apply the Opalescence Boost tooth bleaching gel, which is chemically activated, so there is no need for any hot lights or lasers. The tooth bleaching gel gently breaks up the stains on your teeth.
- After three 15-minute applications within one hour, you rinse, and the teeth whitening treatment is complete – leaving you with a brighter, whiter smile.
This method is a fantastic option for patients who want brighter smiles in a minimal treatment time.
We also recommend our Opalescence Boost teeth whitening patients have us make custom, take-home teeth whitening trays, so they can touch up their smile regularly and keep it at its brightest and best.
Take-Home Teeth Whitening System
This method offers the comfort of whitening at home along with professional results!
First, our team will take impressions of your teeth. Then we will create two custom whitening “trays” that are a perfect fit for your teeth. It’s up to you when you wear them, whether you put them in during the night or during the day.
The trays hold a tooth bleaching solution that will gently lighten the shade of your teeth over a period of seven to fourteen days. Every few months you can “touch up” your whitening by wearing your custom whitening trays for a day or two to keep your teeth at their whitest shade.
Over-the-Counter Whitening Treatments
These methods do not offer the effectiveness or the safety that a professional treatment can offer you. Each of these treatment methods has a drawback that can impact the shade of your teeth and your oral health.
Teeth Whitening Strips
Teeth whitening strips are thin, flexible plastic strips with a thin film of hydrogen peroxide bleaching on one side. These can be purchased at the pharmacy or grocery store.
Whitening strips contain a lower concentration of whitening agent than professional whitening procedures and are more difficult to use on all your teeth. This means that your smile may not have the consistent, bright results you are hoping to see.
Paint-On Teeth Whitening
Paint-on teeth whitening allows you to apply a tooth bleaching agent directly to your teeth without an appliance or strip. You simply “paint” the whitener onto the surface of clean, dry teeth and wait about 30 minutes while the paint turns to a dry film. To remove this film, you simply brush your teeth with a toothbrush.
Paint-on whitening products require twice-daily applications to be effective. The duration of treatment will vary, and the agent is a lower concentration than professional procedures that whiten teeth. Although fine for a quick solution before an important event, the results may not last as long as you hope.
All toothpastes help remove surface stains from your teeth through the action of mild abrasives. “Whitening” toothpastes in the ADA Seal of Acceptance program have polishing agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness and whiten teeth.
Unlike professional whitening, these products do not alter the intrinsic color of teeth. Depending on the cause of your tooth discoloration, you may not experience lasting results or even see the shade you are hoping for. Occasionally teeth whitening toothpastes can have minor side effects like sensitivity or gum irritation.
Finding the Best Teeth Whitening Treatment for You
We’ll be happy to consult with you and share whether whitening is your most effective option.
Teeth whitening does not work for everyone. Yellowish teeth will probably whiten well, but brownish teeth may whiten less effectively. Grayish teeth may not whiten well at all.
Likewise, whitening may not enhance your smile if you have had tooth-colored fillings or dental crowns. The teeth whitener will not affect the color of these materials, and they will stand out in your newly whitened smile. In these cases, porcelain veneers or prepless veneers may be the best options.
